PT Indonesia BTR New Energy Material is Ready to Become the 2nd Largest Anode Manufacturer Factory in the World

PT Indonesia BTR New Energy Material inaugurated the opening of Anode electric battery component factory in Kendal Industrial Park on 7 August 2024. This inauguration was also attended by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, the Minister of Investment, Representatives of the Ambassador China for Indonesia, as well as several regional governments.

 

BTR is a company from China which was founded in 2000 and has succeeded in becoming the number one largest Anode Factory in the world. At the end of 2023, BTR decided to expand to Indonesia with an investment value of USD 478 million in the first stage, then USD 299 million in the next stage. There will be 7,800 workers absorbed with the absorption of 6,000 local workers during construction, and 1,800 local workers when operating in the first and second stages.

 

After officially operating, PT Indonesia BTR New Energy Material will produce 80,000 tons of anode material, while continuing to expand development at the same location. Phase two construction will begin immediately and is targeted for completion in the first quarter of 2025 with an additional production capacity of 80,000 tons per year. With total production of 160,000 tons per year, this makes Indonesia the second largest producer of lithium-ion battery anode materials in the world after China.

 

At the inauguration event, President Joko Widodo said that Indonesia is currently focusing on down streaming the industry, not only in nickel commodities but also copper, tin, etc., including electric vehicle components. "Because Indonesia wants to build an electric vehicle ecosystem, building an integrated EV ecosystem is something that must be done to make us an important part of the world supply chain." The President also welcomed the operation of this anode factory, which he said would strengthen Indonesia's electric vehicle industry.

 

The production results from the BTR factory will be supplied to several brands such as BYD, SK Group, LG, Samsung, and various other leading companies. As well as exporting to various leading companies in America, Europe, Japan and Korea.

 

When met directly, He Xueqin as Chairman of BTR New Material Group expressed his goals and hopes for investing in Indonesia. "Apart from supporting the government's downstream program, we hope that this project can also increase the country's foreign exchange. "We also hope that this BTR project can support Indonesia to integrate into the global supply chain of lithium battery materials and become a global player in the battery and electric vehicle ecosystem."

 

In the future, to meet demand for green products, BTR will use energy from gas, and is committed to carrying out an energy transition and plans to enter into a green electricity sales and purchase agreement with PT. PLN (Persero) in the second stage.

 

Setyono Djuandi Darmono, Founder & President Director of PT Jababeka Tbk as a Joint Venture company from PT Kawasan Industri Kendal, revealed the multiplier effect created by the presence of BTR in KEK Kendal. "Currently, the automotive industry and renewable energy are starting to become a new trend in the Kendal SEZ. Of course, we hope that with the operation of BTR, this will attract other renewable energy and automotive industries to enter and create an integrated industrial ecosystem in the area. "Apart from that, with the increasing growth of industry in the region, it is hoped that it can expand labor absorption, increase regional and national economic growth," he said.
